The resolution to change the name of the state has been passed in the Kerala Assembly. A resolution has been passed to officially change the name of ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam’. If the central government also gives it the green signal, then the name of Kerala will become Keralam. Now the state government after passing the resolution has urged the central government to change the name of the state to ‘Keralaam’ in all the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
While moving the resolution, the Chief Minister said that the state is called ‘Keralam’ in Malayalam, but it is still Kerala in other languages. In fact, the name of the state is written as Kerala in the first schedule of the constitution and now it has been demanded to be made Keralam and the name has been asked to be changed in the eighth schedule. Also it is being said that on 1st November 1956, Kerala was made a separate state on the basis of language and the name is different in the language.
According to the oldest documents, the inscription of Kerala emperor Ashoka dates back to 257 BC. In this inscription the local ruler is shown as Keralaputra. The Malayalam speaking people were ruled by various kings and princely states in the region.
