Rise of Indian pride on the chessboard

Indian Grand Master D. Gukesh achieved a new feat at the age of 18 by defeating Ding Liren of China in the World Chess Championship-2024 in Singapore and won the title of World Champion. It is believed that Gukesh registered his victory in the 14th game played last in a situation of 6.5-6.5. This is why he has become the youngest world champion.

Gukesh, who now shares the honour with Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand, said, “After Anand’s loss in 2013, I dreamt that one day I would bring back the title.” His win is not just a personal achievement but also the beginning of a new era for Indian chess.

Gukesh’s success was due to his relatively young age, mental strength and the guidance of Vishwanathan Anand’s Westbridge Anand Chess Academy. He took advantage of a mistake made by Ding Liren on the 55th move of the 14th game and won cleverly.

Talking about the rise of young talent in Indian chess, Gukesh is in the top 15 along with players like Arjun Erigaisi and R. Praggnanandhaa. This shows that the hard work and effort of the new players in Indian chess has increased their chances of becoming a world champion.

Gukesh’s parents took a big risk on his chess career, giving him the opportunity to fulfill his dreams. Thus, Indian feature chess has reached a new height.
