Fashion fraternity was in shock when they learnt of death of eminent fashion designer Sharbari Dutta death. Sixty-three-year old Sharbari Dutta died following a stroke at her residence in Kolkata, her family said.
Living alone in Broad Street, Sharbari Dutta, was found dead in the washroom of her home. She was not reachable on phone since morning, the family said.
The doctors diagnosed stroke as the reason for her death but sent the body for a post-mortem examination as it was found in the washroom, family sources said.
Sharwari is famous for designing traditional men’s clothing. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai were married in 2006. Sharbari Dutt from Kolkata designed Abhishek Bachchan’s dress for the wedding.
Aishwarya Rai’s mother Brinda Rai wanted to wear a dress designed by Sharwari Dutt to her son-in-law. At the time, Sharwari was the only female designer in India to design only men’s traditional clothing.
Sharwari told a news outlet in 2008, “I sent them 30 pieces of traditional men’s clothing after Brinda Rai said that the Bachchan family should wear the clothes I designed. I hope that Amitabh Bachchan himself will wear a dress from this collection. ”
The daughter of Bengali poet Ajit Dutta, she showed her prowess in fashion designing after passing from college and made her mark in designing men’s ethnic wear. Her label became popular for her unique blend of ethnicity with modernity in fabric and vibrancy in colour, changing the notion that men don’t have much sartorial choices.
Later, Sharbari Dutta set up her own brand Shunyaa which has its outlets in Kolkata. She dabbled into women’s wear and was a known face in fashion shows organised in the city.
The news of her death was greeted with shock by the showbiz fraternity.
Jagjit Singh, Vijay Mallya, Leander Page, Kapil Dev, Baichung Bhutia and many others are also wearing clothes designed by the Sharwari department.
Singers Parama Banerjee and Ujjaini Mukherjee, actors Srabonty Chatterjee, Rukmini Moitra and Pujarini Ghosh, theatre personality-director Debesh Chatterjee expressed grief and shock on social media.
“RIP Sharbari Dutta. Gone too soon,” said one of the posts.
Sharbari Dutta is survived by her fashion designer son Amalin Dutta.
