Renowned Malayalam film industry actor Mohanlal resigned yesterday from the position of President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). This decision comes in the wake of the report by the Justice K. Hema Committee, which detailed the harassment and mistreatment of women professionals in the film industry. The report highlighted the severe discrimination and challenges faced by women in the Malayalam film industry, leading to widespread outrage and demands for accountability.
Before Mohanlal, director Ranjith and actor Siddique had also resigned from their leadership roles in the state-run Film Academy and AMMA, respectively. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had also convened a high-level meeting with senior police officials to investigate the atrocities being committed against female artists.
Several female artists have alleged that they were forced to compromise even before beginning their work. These allegations have raised serious concerns about the safety of these artists in the Malayalam film industry. It is noteworthy that the government had formed the Justice Hema Committee in 2019 to study the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The report has revealed crucial information about the sexual harassment, exploitation, and mistreatment of women.
