The ban on sugar export has come into effect from today. The ban will remain in force till the end of the festive season in October. India is the largest producer of sugar in the world, but its consumption is also high.
The government last week decided to cap sugar exports to ensure domestic availability. Food Ministry Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said India’s exports reached a record high this marketing season.
The consumption of sugar increases during the festive season in the months of October-November. He said that the demand for sugar may increase in view of the global situation, that is why the government decided to set limits on sugar exports.
