In order to try to cut surging infection rates, England will impose complete lockdown, most likely until mid-February, PM Boris Johnson said on Monday.
The complete lockdown would mean that the schools, including primary and secondary schools would be shut down. The move comes after Scotland announced similar steps would come into force on Tuesday at midnight onwards.
About 44 million inhabitants, or three-quarters of England’s population, are now living under the hardest constraints, as Britain is grappling with one of the highest mortality rates.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has explained that nearly 27,000 patients with Covid were in the hospital as of Monday and 40 percent higher than at the start of the first phase of the April epidemic last year.
More than 80,000 people tested positive in just 24 hours last Tuesday.
“With much of the nation now under drastic steps, it is clear that, together, we need to do more to get this new variant under control when our vaccine is under control.’’ Said the PM The new measures are closing of schools, operating from home whenever possible, with the exception of exercise, restrictions on leaving home, necessary shopping and medical supplies and no mixture of households.
After the next school holidays in mid-February, Johnson said he hoped the constraints will continue to be lifted, and agreed the weeks ahead “will be the hardest yet”
But he said he was inspired by the launch of two Covid vaccines, including one produced by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, which could classify the four most susceptible.
