The total number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in India crossed the 32 lakh-mark on Tuesday with Maharashtra reporting the highest number of cases.
According to the Union health ministry’s morning bulletin on Covid-19, India had a total of 31,67,323 Covid-19 cases.
However, since then states have reported new cases through the day and the country’s cumulative figure has crossed the 32 lakh-mark. The new cases will be updated in the health ministry’s Covid bulletin on Wednesday.
Among major states, Maharashtra reported 10,425 fresh Covid-19 cases today, while Andhra Pradesh reported 9,927 cases.
Besides them, Karnataka reported 8,161 news cases, Tamil Nadu 5,951, Uttar Pradesh 5,124 cases, Delhi 1,544 cases, Gujarat 1,096, Uttarakhand 485 and Manipur 82 cases.
These cases collectively take India’s Covid-19 case tally to 32,10,118. Data on fresh cases in other states is not known at present.
Meanwhile, India on Tuesday also reported the highest number of new coronavirus cases worldover for the 18th straight day. According to an analysis by Reuters, India has been well ahead of the US and Brazil in terms of the daily new cases.
India has been reporting more than 55,000 cases every day for the 10 days.
It took India from the end of January, when the country’s first case was reported, until July to reach around 1.6 million cases, a period when the government imposed a strict lockdown.
However, infections have rocketed by another 1.5 million since the start of August, taking the total to around 3.1 million, behind only Brazil and the United States.
“If we cross the absolute numbers (in Brazil and the United States), I won’t be surprised, but we also have a larger population,” Giridhar Babu, epidemiologist at the non-profit Public Health Foundation of India, told Reuters.
