A female Afghan news anchor and protester was shot dead by attackers on Thursday, said her boss, the second journalist killed in Afghanistan in a month.
Malalai Maiwand, in her 20s, was killed along with her driver Mohammad Tahir in the eastern town of Jalalabad as they travelled to work, said Enekaas TV, the private television channel she worked for.
Earlier, her mother who was an activist was also killed by mysterious gunmen five years back. She had previously spoken about the challenges of becoming a female reporter in Afghanistan’s ultra-conservative patriarchal structure. Her death comes as targeted killings of public figures become more frequent in rising violence, amid continuing peace talks between the government and the Taliban.
