The Central Government has issued a warning to social media influencers showing advertisements of foreign online platforms related to online betting and gambling. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to all social media influencers and influencers to avoid promoting or advertising online betting and gambling platforms.
The Ministry has advised online advertising intermediaries not to target such promotional content to Indian people. Social media intermediaries have also been advised to make conscious efforts to avoid publishing such content among their users.
In the advisory issued on Thursday, the Ministry has warned that action can be taken against social media influencers who do not comply with it under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act-2019. This includes removal of social media posts or accounts and punitive action under applicable laws.
