The top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will discuss the names of the candidates for the Gujarat Assembly elections today i.e. on Wednesday.
The Central Election Committee of the BJP will meet here in the evening to decide the names of the candidates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are also included in this committee.
The BJP is aiming to register a victory in Gujarat for the seventh time in a row. Voting for the Gujarat Assembly elections will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5. Sources said the BJP is likely to finalize the names of all the 183 candidates during the meeting and release the list in the next few days.
He said that the party wants to infuse new energy in the organization with the aim of setting a new record in terms of seat-sharing. In view of this, the possibility of keeping many senior leaders out of the list cannot be ruled out.
Sources also said that the party has received suggestions that it should choose fresh and young faces. The BJP won 99 seats and its main rival Congress 77 in the 2017 assembly elections in the state. The BJP’s strength in the assembly has gone up to 111 with several Congress MLAs switching sides, and it is unlikely that the BJP will give re-tickets to all the sitting MLAs.
