Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024, after his exceptional performance of taking 71 wickets in 13 Test matches. Bumrah bowled a total of 357 overs and had an average of 14.92, making him the most suitable candidate for this prestigious honor.
With this remarkable feat, Bumrah has joined the ranks of great Indian bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev to take more than 70 Test wickets in a calendar year. His performance played a key role in him winning the award, beating Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and England batsmen Harry Brook and Joe Root.
The year 2024 was a great one for Bumrah, who gave excellent performances on home and foreign pitches alike. He played a key role in getting India close to the 2025 World Test Championship final, although the team failed to make it to the final.
Bumrah’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia was extremely impressive where he took 32 wickets in five matches. His achievement not only earned him the Player of the Series award but also proved that his bowling ability is effective on any side of the pitch.
He made the match against South Africa in Cape Town memorable by taking eight wickets, making him the 12th Indian bowler to take 200 wickets in Test cricket. With this achievement, Bumrah cemented his unique position as the only bowler to have an average of less than 20 (19.4).
