Manipur Chief Minister Shri N. Biren Singh recently decided to resign from his office, which he submitted to Governor Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. After the resignation, the Governor directed him to be appointed as the caretaker Chief Minister until the formation of a new government. In his resignation letter, Shri Singh described serving the people of Manipur as an honour for him and expressed gratitude to the Central Government for the development and intervention.
According to sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party, the appointment of the new Chief Minister will be announced soon, before which Mr Singh met Union Home Minister Mr Amit Shah. His policies have also been criticized due to his methods of dealing with controversies and caste conflicts.
For some time now, opposition parties, especially the Congress, have been considering bringing a no-confidence motion against the government in the assembly. Mr Singh had publicly apologised for the violence in Manipur last year and vowed to improve the disturbed atmosphere prevailing in the state.
