With four states going for polls today, it turned out to be a busy day for the all the four states today in India. Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s appeal to the state’s Muslim population not to divide their votes shows that she has lost their support, PM Modi said today. While on the subject, he also pointed out that the BJP would have faced the wrath of the Election Commission and the media if it had made a similar appeal to Hindus.
PM Modi who was on election canvassing in Cooch Behar, north Bengal, as the state’s third phase of elections began. He also told the crowd that he would return their love “with interest, in the form of development.”
Muslims constitute 27% of West Bengal’s population, the votes are important for Mamata’s TMC as it fights the BJP. The entry of two Muslim leaders, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and a religious leader from Furfura Sharif, has tainted the pitch this time.
Dear Didi, recently you said all Muslims should unite, and not allow their votes to be divided. You are saying this means that you are convinced that the Muslim vote bank has also gone out of your hands, the Muslims have also turned away from you,” PM Modi said.
“That you had to say so publicly — this shows that you have lost the election,” he added.
“Didi, you are abusive towards the Election Commission. But had we asked the Hindus to unite and vote for BJP, we would have got eight or ten notices from the Election Commission. Editorials would have been written about us in the entire country,” he added.
The BJP has requested that the Election Commission take action against Ms Banerjee, alleging that she violated the Representation of the People Act by encouraging Muslims to vote for her Trinamool Congress. PM Modi also claimed that Ms Banerjee had harmed Bengalis’ self-esteem by claiming that people attend his rallies for money.
