On March 11, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shared a stunning picture of a spiral galaxy, leaving netizens mesmerized. Shared on the official Instagram of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, the image features the M91 galaxy situated 60 million light-years away from Earth.
According to the NASA blog post, the M91 is one of over a thousand galaxies that make up the Virgo cluster—a group of galaxies that are gravitationally linked together. The article also shows that M91 is an anemic galaxy, which means that it has a lower rate of star formation relative to other spiral galaxies.
Nasa posted “A trillion stars reside in this barred spiral galaxy, M109.
Located about 60 million light-years away, M109 is also one of the faintest objects in the Messier catalog — a compilation of cosmic objects created by the astronomer Charles Messier: https://go.nasa.gov/3rETm3X
This week, we shared newly released Hubble images from the Messier catalog to help kick off the Messier Marathon stargazing event starting this month. Amateur astronomers use telescopes and binoculars to search for as many Messier objects as they can find in one night!”
