The Rajya Sabha approved the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, which was earlier approved by the Lok Sabha. On this historic occasion, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi described the passage of the Bill as an important step towards socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth of the country. He expressed confidence that this change will be especially beneficial for those sections which have been marginalized in the society for a long time. Along with this, he thanked all the members and parliamentary committees who participated in the fruitful discussion on this Bill.
Passage of this Bill will be a strong step towards addressing the lack of transparency and accountability in the Waqf system, which will especially benefit Muslim women, poor Muslims and Pasmanda Muslims. The Prime Minister emphasized that the newly passed Bill will help in protecting citizens’ rights and increasing transparency.
He further said that India is now entering a new era where structural reforms will be brought in a more modern and social justice oriented manner. The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 128 votes in support and 95 against, thereby achieving parliamentary assent. The aim of this legislation is to amend the Wakf Act to bring about significant changes in the structure of the Wakf Board and reduce legal disputes.
