PM Modi presented the Gandhi Peace Prize 2020 to late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s daughters Sheikh Rehana and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which was bestowed upon late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman posthumously by the Government of India.
The Gandhi Peace Prize was instituted by the Indian government in 1995 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The award has been given posthumously for the first time.
At the time of Bangladesh’s independence, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was imprisoned in Pakistan. On January 8, 1972, he was set free and returned to Dhaka two days later.
He went on to become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Later, he was assassinated along with his whole family in a military coup on August 15, 1975. Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana were in Europe at the time and survived this tragedy.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman served as the first President of Bangladesh and is known as the ‘Father of the Nation’ in the country.
PM Modi is in Bangladesh for a two-day visit to mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence and the centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth. He will also meet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In his speech at the 50th National Day celebrations at National Parade Square, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it was an honor for India to award the Gandhi Peace Prize to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Wearing a ‘Mujib Jacket’ as a tribute to Rahman, or ‘Bangabandhu,’ as he is commonly known, Modi stated that the bravery and leadership of Bangladesh’s ‘Father of the Nation’ had saved the country from enslavement. He presented Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Rehana with a Rs 1 crore award, a citation, a plaque, and a traditional shawl.
