Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui arrested for insulting Hindu Gods, Amit Shah

Munawar Faruqui, a stand-up comedian was apprehended for allegedly insulting Hindu sentiments and also Home minister Amit Shah during a comedy show in Indore. The incident came to light when a group of Hindu activists visited the event to track it and stopped the proceedings when the artist made the supposedly unwanted references.

The comedian was taken into legal custody for performing at a cafe in the famous 56 Dukan town of Indore. Other detained include Inodre-based Prakhar Vyas, Priyam Vyas, Nalin Yadav, and event organiser Edwin Anthony.

“The arrested men have been booked under IPC sections 188, 269, 34 and 295A for organising the event sans permission, flouting COVID-19 safety norms, and hurting religious sentiments,” said Kalmesh Sharma, in charge of the Tukoganj Police Station in Indore.

The case was brought on the grounds of a complaint by Eklavya Gaur, convenor of Hind Rakshak Sangathan and son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur.

“Munawar Faruqui is an offender who has also insulted Hindu gods-goddesses at his shows in the past. We came to his show, we even bought tickets. Those playing there also made derisive references to the Home Minister Amit Shah and unnecessarily connected his name pulled with the Godhra carnage,” said Mr. Gaur.
