The Supreme Court today sentenced former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year rigorous imprisonment in a road rage case. In 1988, Gurnam Singh of Patiala was killed in a road rage incident. A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and SK Kaul dismissed the plea for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code.
The Supreme Court had earlier allowed review of its May 2018 order acquitting Navjot Singh Sidhu.
According to this order, Punjab Police will take Sidhu into custody. Sidhu was earlier released with a fine of Rs 1,000.
On May 15, 2018, the Supreme Court had set aside the Punjab and Haryana High Court order holding Sidhu guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The High Court had sentenced Sidhu to three years’ imprisonment in the case. But the Supreme Court had convicted Sidhu of causing hurt to a senior citizen. The Supreme Court had exempted him from jail sentence and imposed a fine
