Virender Sehwag has demanded from BCCI to write ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India’ on Team India’s jersey. Sehwag said this in response to a question on Twitter. Sehwag is very vocal on social media and after this statement a new debate has started.
Sehwag said, “I have always believed that a name should be such that it instills pride in us. We are Indians, India is a name given by the British and it has taken a long time to officially get back our original name ‘Bharat’. I urge BCCI and Jai Shah to ensure that our players have India on their chest in this World Cup. ,
Sehwag recalled how the Netherlands had used ‘Holland’ as their official name for the 1996 ODI World Cup and Burma had also changed their name back to Myanmar. He wrote, “In the 1996 World Cup, the Netherlands came to India to play in the World Cup as Holland. When we met him in 2003, he was in the Netherlands and he is there now. Burma has changed the name given by the British back to Myanmar.
