The central government has decided to rename the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair, to Shri Vijaypuram. This decision reflects the historical and cultural connections of the region, inspired by the ancient Shri Vijaya Empire. Amit Shah shared this information through a post on X. He said, “Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve to free the country from all symbols of slavery, the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to rename Port Blair to ‘Shri Vijaypuram’.”
He further stated that the name ‘Shri Vijaypuram’ represents our struggle for independence and the contribution of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in it. This island has held a unique place in our country’s independence and history. Once a naval base during the Chola Empire, this island is now ready to accelerate the country’s security and development.
Shah added, “This island is also the place where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose first hoisted the tricolor and where Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters struggled for the independence of Mother India in the Cellular Jail.”123
