Ahead of the Kerala Assembly election, veteran Congressman PC Chacko who has been a loyalist for many years has quit the party citing differences in the party.. He said there is a lot groupism in the Kerala State Unit of the Party.
Chacko’s departure is a big setback for the Congress party before the crucial April 6 polls. It is also a major embarrassment for the party,

I left the Congress and sent my resignation to Sonia Gandhi, the party’s interim president. I have been deliberating on this decision for a couple of days. I’m from Kerala, where there’s no Congress Party like that. There are two parties – Congress (I) & Congress (A). It is the coordinating committee of the two groups that operates as the KPCC,” Chacko said caustically.
The leader was also steadfast in his assault on the party’s top leadership, claiming that even senior party leaders practiced groupism. He said that the party’s command courted all factions instead of putting an end to it.
He said, “Kerala is faced with a critical election. Citizens want Congress to come back, but the groupism is practiced by the top representatives of the Congress. I pled with the high command that this should be brought to an end. Although the High Command still agrees with the suggestion made by both parties.”
“The congress is a wonderful tradition. Being a Congressman is a prestigious thing, but nobody can be a Congressman in Kerala today. One can belong to either ‘I Party’ or ‘A Group.’ But I’ve decided to call it a day. High Command is a silent spectator to this tragedy and there is no solution,” said the veteran chief of the Congress.
Chacko’s departure also given heat to the ongoing discussion on the Congressional leadership issue. However, like the so-called ‘G-23 founders’ of the party, Chacko too was quickly blamed for resigning from the loyalists of the Gandhi family.
