Minister of defence Rajnath Singh said on Sunday that development programs in Assam have increased as armed uprising and terror in the state have dropped significantly over the years.
Bringing up his maiden election rally in Biswanath, a district bordering Arunachal Pradesh, he said that with thousands of extremist groups belonging to large numbers of insurgents laying their arms during the last five years of Bharatiya Janata Party regime, tranquility and ethnic harmony have restored to Assam after several years.
Indicating that the BJP-led government had secured a significant chunk of the Indian-Bangladesh frontier and configured electronic surveillance and devices all along the river in Dhubri, he said that if BJP were to remain in power, the remaining areas of the frontier would also be blocked to prevent illegal Bangladeshis from entering India.
The BJP government in Tripura also took several steps to prevent illegal influx from the neighbouring state, he said.
“BJP has a government in Tripura. With your blessings and support, we are confident that we are going to form governments in Assam and West Bengal,” Rajnath Singh said.
Listing the projects and schemes implemented by the Central and Assam governments, he said: “For the firt time in the history of India, under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), each farmer in India is getting Rs 6,000 directly into his bank account.”
The veteran BJP leader even said that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi stated that out of Re 1 given by the Center, only 16 paisa reach out to the people, but now, even during BJP administration, the entire Re one will benefit the common people.
“The situation in Assam has changed a lot and it is on the path of progress and prosperity. We are proud to say that there is not a simple or single allegation of corruption against Sarbananda Sonowal government.”
Making a reference to Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, the Minister of Defense said the government was committed to respecting the heritage and culture of Assam and said recognizing Bhupen Hazarika with Bharat Ratna is a token of their appreciation for the kingdom. Srimanta Sankardeva was a 15th-16th century Assamese saint, scholar, poet, playwright, social activist and an enthusiastic supporter in Assam’s cultural or religious history.
