The Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Dr Harsh Vardhan, has practically inaugurated India’s largest Meteorological Centre in Leh. After the Itanagar Center in Arunachal Pradesh, the Leh Met centre is the highest in the Himalayan area at 3500 metres above average sea level. The AIR correspondent informs that four Automated Weather Stations (AWS) and the Meteorological Department Center for the Ladakh Region have begun work from today.
Despite the Covid pandemic, a new centre to cater for the arid cold desert and geo-politically all relevant Ladakh weather requirements has been built within nine months.
Minister Harshavardhan said that the Ladakh Met Center is one of the promises made by the Union Government to the welfare of the current Union Territory of Ladakh. The new Center will provide Ladakh with more reliable and consistent weather forecasts for the area.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur appealed to Harsh Vardhan for the Ladakh specific Weather App, Data incorporation of a large number of Ladakh micro-climatic conditions and Display Boards at entry points to the Ladakh area to make the public and visitors aware of the weather conditions and to plan.
Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Earth Sciences Secretary Dr. M Rajeevan, IMD DG Dr. M Mohapatra, Additional DG, Mr. Anand Sharma, Ladakh Weather Station Director Sonam Lotus were also present at the virtual inauguration gathering.
