At least six people have been killed and five others injured in a powerful earthquake that struck the Himalayan region late on Tuesday. Tremors of the earthquake were felt in parts of Nepal and also in northern India, causing deep sleepers to suddenly run out of homes in the middle of the night.
According to India’s National Center for Seismology, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck at 1:57 pm, with its epicenter in Nepal, about 90 km east-southeast of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand.
Earthquake tremors of low intensity have been felt several times in the region over the past few days. Earlier, two tremors of earthquake were felt in western Nepal. An earthquake of 5.7 magnitude was felt at 9.07 pm on Tuesday night, and a 4.1-magnitude earthquake was felt at 9:56 pm on Tuesday night.
Nepal’s Interior Ministry spokesman Phanindra Pokharel said that six people were killed in the earthquake. Pokharel told over phone that five seriously injured people have been admitted to the district hospital in Doti. A police post and eight houses were reported to have collapsed in the quake.
