Actor Debashree Roy Quits TMC

The latest chapter in the TMCs story of exits this election season is two-time MLA, Debashree Roy.

Debashree Roy, a two-time Trinamool Congress MLA, resigned from the party on Monday after being dropped as a candidate for the Bengal election, which begins later this month.
Debashree Roy, 59, told the party in a letter that she no longer wanted to be affiliated with the Trinamool Congress. She was on the brink of leaving the party in 2019.

“While I hold no position in the organisation, I thought it was important to write this letter because I wanted to remind the leadership that I no longer want to be affiliated with the TMC,” she wrote in a letter to the party’s Bengal president, Subrata Bakshi.

She had been resentful of her faction for some time and was said to have been slighted. The last straw was being eliminated as a candidate.

Debashree Roy is a two-term MLA from Raidighi in the south 24 Paraganas district. When asked whether she planned to join the BJP, she said she would focus on her acting ventures but would consider joining either party “if there is a definite proposal.”

Bengal will vote for a new government in eight rounds from March 27 and the results will be announced on May 2.
