Today, Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra was sworn in as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He took over for Sunil Arora, who had retired. He was given the charge as Chief Election Commissioner after the President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Chandra as the 24th CEC on Monday.

He is scheduled to leave office on 14 May 2022, and as the CEC, he will oversee the conduct of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur.
While the terms of the assemblies in Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur are set to expire in March 2022, the term of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly is set to expire in May 2022. During his more than two-year tenure as an Election Commissioner, Chandra oversaw assembly elections in more than ten states and worked to make the entire nomination process online.
