FIFA has banned the sale of alcohol in and around stadiums in Qatar. This decision has been taken two days before the start of the Football World Cup.
FIFA has said that this decision has been approved after consultation with the authorities of the host country. However, non-alcoholic beverages will be available for sale at all stadiums in Qatar hosting World Cup matches.
When Qatar began the bidding process to host the World Cup, the country agreed to respect FIFA’s commercial partners and did so when signing the contract after winning the vote in 2010. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the host country was forced to change a rule allowing the sale of alcohol. However, this exemption will not be available in Qatar.
The Football World Cup is being held in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December.
