Floods claim 55 lives in Assam and Bihar, red alert for Kerala

Flood condition is worsening in Assam and parts of Bihar with the death toll rising to 55 while rain related incident claimed 14 lives in Uttar Pradesh.

A red alert was also sounded in Kerala for extremely heavy rains might hit the southern state of the country.

The India Meterogical Department bulletin said, “More over 204 mm rains are likely in 24 hours in six districts of the southern state.”

While North India observing heavy rains which lashed Punjab and Haryana and the national capital city of Delhi received light showers for a second consecutive day.

According to Bihar’s government data, unusual torrential rainfall in Nepal and subsequent massive discharge of water in rivers led to the floods in Bihar, which claimed at least livestill Tuesday late night and 25.71 lakh people are affected in 16 districts of the state, from there more than one lakh people have been moved to safer areas. In Assam, the natural calamity has affected 33 districts and claimed 17 lives included wild animals of Kaziranga National Park. More than 45 lakh people are affected by the calamity, an officials stated.

A statement from the Assam Ministry of Forest and Environment said, “Ninety per cent of the famed Kaziranga National Park in Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state is still submerged.”

Kaziranga National Park is home to the world’s largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, so the authorities are working round the clock to check poaching as more over 150 anti-poaching camps are still active inside the park.According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level in most of the affected districts, including in Guwahati.

The flood situation in Manas National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is also critical as vast stretches in them have been inundated and animals are moving towards the neighbouring highlands. Besides the two states, five persons had died earlier in rain-related incidents in Mizoram.
