During the Modi government’s first term, the Triple talaq Bill was effectively stalled. This was the third time the Bill was considered in the Upper House. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 25..
Government put the bill tittled : The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, before Rajya Sabha, for seeking to make the practice of instant triple talaq illegal with up to three years in jail for the husband. Opposing the bill, opposition parties including the Congress, TMC, Samajwadi Party and DMK demanded that the proposed legislation be sent to select committee for further scrutiny. They also moved a motion for the same which was, however, defeated.
During the debate on the bill, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said the “real motive of triple talaq bill is destruction of families even though bill claims to protect the rights of women.”He stated that the Bill is for protection of rights on marriage but the real motive is destruction of families.
Moving the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad argued, “The proposed legislation should be not seen through a political prism or vote bank politics. The bill aims at ensuring gender dignity, justice and equality.”
The bill was passed in Lok Sabha on Thursday last week but the biggest challenge for Narendra Modi government was to get it through the upper house of the parliament where the BJP does not have a absolute majority in upper house of the parliamentWhile National spokesperson for BJP, Sambit Patra too lauded the abolition of the Triple talaq practice. .
